a museum

it was cloudy today, not good light for taking photos.  so we decided after doing a little painting that we would go take in a museum.  i had neglected to pack my gum arabic, and wanted to mix up a bit of the dry pigments i’d brought, so we needed to go to an art store.  and it so happened there was one right next door to my favorite store in venice – julia sharma’s scarf shop behind piazza san marco.  so i proposed going to one of the museums at san marco, of which there are several we’ve already paid for (our museum/church passes).

so we walked.  from campo san polo to piazza san marco is only a short walk, well marked.  we didn’t stop on the way except to take only a few photos (today’s total almost 200).  and we were there in no time.  i only had to look at the map app once, and even then saw something in the other direction and ignored it.  and found our shop anyway.

unfortunately the price on the gum arabic was three times what it was in that little shop in castello, so i bought a palette knife (which i’d also forgotten) instead, and we’ll just have to get the gum arabic another day.

and i totally resisted the scarves next door, even tho the january sales are still on, and if i’d ventured inside the shop i would have found something i loved.  but not today.  and thirty moments later we were in the piazza.  connor took one look and said, ‘i can run here.’  and indeed he could.  he was off like a light and most of the way to the campanile before i called to him.  then he wanted to do it again, and gave us his coat.  but this time he only got halfway and turned around, out of breath.  it’s a very big square.

connor had just run halfway to the campanile and back, and was out of breath

so we went into the museo correr, up a very grand staircase filled with tromp l’oeil paintings of statues.  there must be noplace on earth with as many paintings trying to look like carved statues.

connor thought maybe he could run here, too, but the place was filled with guards, who while doting on the piccolo, wouldn’t let him run.

he got more and more bored, as jim and i ventured first into wonderfully decorated rooms (the wallpaper is made of fabric), then into rooms with objects, then into rooms of statues, and then into rooms with paintings.

if connor and i were to enact the madonna and child, we’d take this attitude after awhile

don’t these put stripper shoes to shame?

after awhile, connor couldn’t wait for us to leave

connor is really a very old soul

i said, ‘look, a mummy,’ and connor said, ‘and there’s the daddy, but there’s no kid’

three hours passed.  we were exhausted. but we saw the whole museum, and then grandpa and i had to sit down for awhile, further irritating connor, who wanted to run again.

so never mind the idea of coming back on foot over the accademia bridge, we hopped a vaporetto.  we did have to pass this one very elegant hotel on the way to the vaporetto, and i made jim and connor go inside to see it (i’d ventured in last time, and got all the way upstairs to a ballroom, but this time i went as far as the wellhead, and connor was starting to bounce on the couches, so we retreated.

we are here.  our house is visible on the 1500 jacopo barbieri map.  i’ve lined it in red.  you can see our living room window from the grand canal, and the house opposite has only two floors still

at home, we had a very late lunch of ham and cheese sandwiches, followed by ice cream and strawberries, and then jim and i had a nap.  i’m just up, jim is sleeping still, and connor has been watching power rangers on his pad.

and now it’s time for me to make dinner.  leftovers tonight; we’ve run out of storage boxes and we need to get rid of them before they go bad.
