lights, camera, action

marie missed her flight due to a series of unfortunate incidents yesterday, and we were expecting her around 9:30 this morning.  so, jim got up at 5:30 and went down to san marco to take pictures on his own, while i planned to stay in bed until marie’s call.

but jim got back around 8:30, and i had a tiny bit of house prep to do for her arrival, so when she finally got thru passport control and security, we walked down to piazzale roma to fetch her and get her vaporetto pass and schlep her across one bridge and down i don’t know how few streets until she was at our  house.  we showed her everything (don’t press that button on the toilet because it’s broken, be sure to tuck the shutters into their little corral, don’t throw your pillow into the air because of this murano glass chandelier, etc.).

then, and after a grocery frozen pizza, liberally enhanced, and a short nap, we stuffed all our cameras into a bag and prepared to go to san marco.  it’s still foggy, so there’s hardly anybody on san giorgio, where the sunset is visible behind the costumers.

at the last minute, marie decided she was way too jetlagged to bother trying to take pictures, and got into her costume.

marie has been working on her costume for several months, and tho she had never lowered a presser-foot or lifted a needle before, she gamely made her own costume, head to toe, out of gorgeous red and gold heavy damask curtain fabric.  i’m talking darts, pleats, hems, and a hat – all in super-ravelly polyester.  kudos marie.  and she did a wonderful job with it, and it was well appreciated down on the runway, i mean the piazzetta of san marco.

in the same spirit, connor got into his costume as well.  this is the pirate costume we had gotten for him on the cheap at costco and augmented with a wig, gloves, and a cape i made for him, topped off by an antique gold-tipped ebony cane jim rescued from a dumpster some years ago.

and then we went down to the vaporetto in all our finery, with jim as principal photorgrapher and me as dresser.

there was an immediate reaction on the boat, as some costumers from idontknow france or germany graciously entertained him with questions and conversations until we got to vallaresso (i misspelled it yesterday).

and then it was one feeding frenzy after another.  photographers stopped marie while we were still walking to the square, several times, and nobody noticed connor until we actually stopped and began posing.  they must have thought he was just another costumed kid, because there were plenty of those.  but once he stood against a backdrop and took a certain stillness, they flocked.

this is how the crowd reacted to connor, standing with one of his several co-models

so we had 2 hours of this.  marie and he soon got separated, jim wandered off to take photos of other models, and i shadowed my assigned responsibilities all over the place.

back to connor.  he was more than happy to stand and take the attention for about half an hour.  he struck this pose, he struck that pose.  i kept having to tell him to put the cane down and stop using it as a gun, and then i had to keep telling him to stop frowning and making unpleasant faces, and with models i had to keep telling him to interact with them.  he’s unsure on the concept at this point, but he’s quite the ham when he’s in the mood.

we invited a few passing models to pose with him, and they knew a good deal when they saw one, so this happened.  a crowd, that then drew closer and closer until they were right up in the models’ faces.  this shot was only the beginning for this particular pose.  i couldn’t get close enough to photograph them when they were really glomming.

meanwhile, marie had found a photographer of  her own, and was taking direction while he got the shots he was looking for.

finally connor had enough of all the attention, and so i took his wig off and unpinned it from his hat, and let him wander after this delightful elf and ask to touch his ears.

and then i took off his cape, and gave him his kindle so he could go be a photographer.  you can see him at the front of this group, taking pictures of marie.  some photographers get down on his level to get their shots, and you can tell it hurts their knees.  connor has the advantage over them every time.

and altho i warned him away from posing with marie, he tried to argue that he wasn’t posing, but reviewing his pictures.  and he didn’t really understand that he couldn’t be in the same shot with her because he wasn’t in costume anymore.  he thought that was a non-reason.  so marie adjusted, and the photographers continued snapping pictures.

we didn’t just get shots of connor and marie, of course, but that was my main interest today.  i did enjoy this angel of death, tho.

and then, mercifully, it was dark, and we wound our way back to the vaporetto stop.  here’s the three of them going over the bridge, with the salute in the background.

it’s supposed to rain tomorrow, so perhaps we’ll all take in the accademia, where they’ve opened a new wing since the last time we were here.
